STEPHANIE REENTS: "The Kissing List" (Book Rack)

Friday, June 8, 2012 - 7:00pm

Bold, inventive, and slyly witty, The Kissing List introduces an explosive new talent in fiction — it’s a brilliant debut that recalls the imagination of Aimee Bender and the sardonic wit of Lorrie Moore. These interlocking stories feature an unforgettable group of young women — Sylvie, Anna, Frances, Maureen — as their lives connect, first during a year abroad at Oxford, then later as they move to New York on the cusp of adulthood. We follow each of them as they navigate the treachery of first dates, temp jobs and roommates, failed relationships and unexpected affairs — all the things that make their lives seem full of possibility, but also rife with potential disappointment. Shot through with laugh-out-loud lines, yet still wrenchingly emotional and resonant, The Kissing List is a book about women who bravely defy expectations and take outrageous chances in the face of a life that might turn out to be anything less than extraordinary.

We are delighted to be kicking off the summer season at the Book Rack with this fantastic debut, a favorite of staff members Alise and Mairead!

Stephanie ReentsStephanie Reents’s fiction has been included in the O. Henry Prize Stories, noted in Best American Short Stories, and has appeared in numerous journals. Stephanie has been a Bread Loaf Conference Scholar, a Stegner Fellow, and a Rhodes Scholar. She is an assistant professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

JENNIFER RICHARD JACOBSON: "Small as an Elephant" (Book Rack)

Saturday, July 14, 2012 - 1:00pm

Jennifer JacobsonEver since Jack can remember, his mom has been unpredictable, sometimes loving and fun, other times caught in a whirlwind of energy and "spinning" wildly until it’s over. But Jack never thought his mom would take off during the night and leave him at a campground in Acadia National Park, with no way to reach her and barely enough money for food. Any other kid would report his mom gone, but Jack knows by now that he needs to figure things out for himself — starting with how to get from the backwoods of Maine to his home in Boston before DSS catches on. With nothing but a small toy elephant to keep him company, Jack begins the long journey south, a journey that will test his wits and his loyalties — and his trust that he may be part of a larger herd after all.

Jennifer Richard Jacobson received her master’s in education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has taught preschool through sixth grade and has served as Curriculum Coordinator, Head of Studies or Language Arts Specialist in several New England schools. As a continuing author-in-residence and educational consultant, Jennifer has worked with thousands of teachers and administrators to help students reach their highest potential.

Thursday, July 26, 2012 - 7:00pm

At long last, a seafood cookbook devoted to New England’s most prized and valuable shellfish! With encouragement from cooking icon Julia Child, "scallop foodies" Elaine and Karin Tammi, a mother/daughter team, have written a cookbook about the scallop fishery. Scallops: A New England Coastal Cookbook is a one-of-a-kind cookbook weaving together some of the best scallop recipes in New England with interviews from Nantucket bay scallop fishermen, marine scientists, world-renowned chefs, shuckers, and sea scallopers to provide an insider’s view into these fisheries. The authors provide an exciting range of recipes from "Fusion" and "Contemporary French" to "Mediterranean" and "Asian," including appetizers, cold salads with warm dressings, baked, broiled, grilled, fried, sauteed, stir-fry, poached and tempura scallop recipes. These tantalizing recipes are accompanied by easy-to-identify symbols indicating dishes that can be prepared in thirty minutes or less and those containing fewer than six ingredients. Additionally, a portion of the funds from the sale of this cookbook will be donated to the Fishermen’s Emergency Relief Fund in New Bedford, MA.

We’ll be tasting some of these delectable recipes, so bring your appetite for scallops!
